In our home we are big on traditions. I think it’s so nice when we can all look forward to visiting places year after year, making beautiful memories, and watching how we’ve changed along the way.

When Haven was born, Tanner and I knew we wanted to start traditions of our own. When we saw that Carlsbad had a gorgeous flower field filled with ranunculus, we immediately decided to make a yearly visit. Haven was four months old the very first time we went! Today marked the third year of visiting the flower fields, and our first year as a family of four. Oh and last year we took a photo of me holding an ultrasound photo of Kaid! (How sweet is it that he’s in our arms to hug and kiss as often as we want now? 🙂 )

If you’re in the San Diego area, I highly recommend taking a day trip here. It’s so beautiful and serene. Not to mention colorful! You’ll be surrounded by flowers as far as your eyes can see! You can even see the ocean from here. Talk about a beautiful place! Typically we go on a Sunday since it’s Tanner’s day off, but this year we planned well in advance, and went on a Wednesday. If you’re able to go during the week, do it! It wasn’t busy at all, and we didn’t have to worry about crowds or people ending up in our photos.

Some tips for going with kids:

  1. Bring cash. You can use your debit or credit card to purchase tickets, but the tractor ride and yummy treats are all cash only. Thankfully I had some with me or we would’ve had a very sad toddler haha!
  2. Get there when they open. We got there around 10:30 am and it wasn’t busy at all! It seems like the crowd starts rolling in around lunch time. Food draws a crowd, no surprise there, right?! 🙂
  3. Bring a stroller. I know this might seem like an obvious suggestion for most parents, but the first year we went we weren’t sure if we should since it was dirt pathways. We ended up exhausted from carrying Haven around throughout the massive field! (It’s on a huge slope!)
  4. Have your kids wear closed toe shoes. This is actually something I just realized this year. They have a huge play place with lots of slides and little play houses. The ground is covered in sand though so if you don’t wear the right shoes then you’re going to get lots of sand in them. Haven and I learned this the hard way haha!
  5. Bring a camera. Again another obvious suggestion, but I love capturing our babies reaction (and curiosity) to new places. Haven has been here three times and has reacted completely different each time! This year she kept saying, “Look! So pretty momma!”  It was so sweet. Whenever we drive home, I look at the photos we took with a huge smile on my face. You’ll never regret taking those photos! (Even if you feel like you’re going “overboard.”)
